Do not put your trust in princes, in whom there is no help.
The Revised Common Lectionary assigns Psalm 146 for today's Psalm. This Hallelujah psalm contrasts the rulers of this world, mere mortals, with God.
The rulers are described as fleeting and ultimately of little help.
Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help.
When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.
In contrast, God is described as the world's Creator, whose help is significant.
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in The Living God, their God,
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;
who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Living God sets the prisoners free;
Humans may not always be trustworthy, but the Psalmist praises God for God's concern for justice and faithfulness.
