"This cup is a sign of the covenant."
Christian leaders around the world on World Communion Sunday lift the cup of wine and proclaim –
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood."
But today, on Rosh Hashanah, I'm left thinking about what we Christians mean by "new covenant."
Thankfully, Christians have mostly given up on the idea that "our" covenant has replaced the Jewish covenant. And God certainly does not revoke divine promises; the covenant endures forever.
For 1st-century Jews, God was indeed doing something NEW, which typically seems to be based on something OLD.
Yet, in our 21st-century post-Shoah context, perhaps we need a friendly amendment to clarify these biblical words from our Gentile perspective:
"This is the cup of the renewed covenant!" or
"This cup is a sign of the covenant."
